Muratie, the historic Stellenbosch estate owned by the Melck family, is the proud recipient of Top 100 SA Wines 2016 status and a National Wine Challenge Double Platinum award for the Muratie Isabella Chardonnay 2015, as well as Double Gold for the Muratie Ansela van de Caab 2012.
The National Wine Challenge/Top 100 SA Wines competition, now in its sixth year, is an objective, independent and professional rating of South Africa’s finest wines to highlight the excellence of South African wines while providing an authoritative reference point for wine lovers internationally. This year, the high profile judging panel, chaired by esteemed UK wine writer and author, Jamie Goode, included a UK Master of Wine, three Cape Wine Masters as well as other highly-acclaimed industry experts.

Muratie Isabella Chardonnay 2015 The story: The Muratie Isabella Chardonnay honours Isabella Melck, eldest daughter of current custodians Rijk and Kim Melck, who lives on the estate with her family and is already infused with the passion for wine and the land. Tasting Notes: The elegant Burgundian-style Chardonnay which spent 9 months in wood, appeals to both wooded and unwooded Chardonnay drinkers. A complex and intriguing wine, it starts to bewitch and beguile before the glass is even raised. Breathe in the heady scents of caramelised pineapples, hazelnuts, citrus fruit and cream before taking a mouthful of ripe, yellow tropical fruits, marmalade and lemon meringue pie supported by spice and vanilla, all of which linger together in an endless finish. The story: The estate flagship red wine honours Ansela van de Caab, a slave-girl at the Castle in Cape Town, who, after a 14-year courtship with Laurens Campher – the first owner of Muratie – was finally emancipated and able to go home with Laurens. The oak tree she planted to bless their marriage still stands on Muratie, as does a small white house, their first home, built for them by Laurens. Tasting notes: This Cabernet Sauvignon-led Bordeaux-style blend is intense and brooding. The nose promises much – cedar wood, blackcurrants and a distinctive herbaceous and spicy edge – and the palate more than delivers with rich, savoury flavours of black olive tapenade, cassis, some perfumed sandalwood and a long finish combining fruity and savoury notes.
