Muratie Cape Ruby Port
The Ruby Port is made from a block of port vines planted in 1994. The cultivars include Tinta Barocca, Tinta Roritz and Souzão.
The port vines yield 5.5 tons per hectare. The grapes are harvested at 26° balling. They are crushed and destalked and pumped into traditional open fermenters. Here the routine of plunging and pumping over commences and when the wine is ready, fortification is done with grape spirits. The port is matured for a minimum of one year in French oak barrels.
As ruby-coloured as its name, this fortified wine exudes warmth, heart and pleasure. Forthright red and black fruit on the nose, with faint whiffs of orange peel and violets, give way to a powerful combination of sweet, ripe fruit (plums, prunes, damsons, mulberries), spice (cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg) and well-integrated alcohol, all providing a warming, but incredibly well-balanced finish. A cheerful and generous wine with plenty of character and body, which will prove a more than worthy partner for a long, confidential evening with a good friend and some great cheese.
