Muratie Wine Estate - Knorhoek Valley, Stellenbosch

Our Story

Located in the Knorhoek Valley north of Stellenbosch, Muratie dates back to 1685 when it was granted by Simon van der Stel, then Governor of the Cape of Good Hope, to German soldier Laurens Campher. Through the centuries Muratie, one of the oldest wine estates in South Africa, had several other colourful owners and is currently under the stewardship of the Melck family, who are deeply rooted here.

Each chapter of the Muratie story is a page-turner. From Laurens and Ansela’s epic love story to the mercenary pioneer Martin Melck. Famous artist George Paul Canitz and his daughter Alberta Annemarie, Amber the Muse. Aristocratic Lady Alice to Barefoot Ben. Legendary Ronnie Melck and the rain king Mr May. These and many other stories are woven into the very fabric of our farm.

Our guiding philosophy is to preserve this rich history and cultural heritage and share it with wine lovers from around the world. Equally important, is to build a future legacy of dedication to excellence. Everyone at Muratie is invested in writing the next great chapter.

Through the ages, we’ve amassed an intimate knowledge of our soils and the special influences on our vines.
Each vineyard block is treated with reverence and our wines are a natural extension of the site where they were grown.
In the cellar, we combine tradition and technology to craft products of superior quality with utmost attention to detail.

A tasting in our cobwebbed tasting room or a tour through our charming cellar with its concrete fermenters
and the romantic chandelier is an unforgettable experience. You’ll hear about the characters the wines
were named after, and might even be roped in to lend a hand on this working farm.
